Turkey eSIM plans
Compare Turkey eSIM data plans and learn what visitors need to know: buy before you land, the 120-day phone rule, and eSIM vs a tourist SIM at Istanbul Airport.
Türkiye has a few rules that catch visitors out. Read this before you buy, especially the first point: in Türkiye, buying a travel eSIM after you land often doesn't work.
Buy and install your eSIM before you travel
Since July 2025, Türkiye's telecom regulator (BTK) has blocked access to the websites and apps of many international eSIM providers from inside the country. The list has grown to more than twenty providers, including Airalo, Holafly, Nomad and Saily.
The block stops you from buying an eSIM in Türkiye, not from using one. An eSIM you bought and installed at home keeps working after you arrive. So buy your plan, install it over Wi-Fi before you leave, and switch it on when you land.
The 120-day rule for phones from abroad
A phone brought from abroad can be used on Turkish networks for up to 120 days, whether you use roaming, a travel eSIM or a Turkish SIM card. After 120 days the phone has to be registered and a registration fee paid (57,241 TL as of January 2026), or it is blocked from Turkish networks.
For a holiday or business trip this doesn't affect you. It matters if you stay longer than four months.
eSIM or tourist SIM at Istanbul Airport?
Turkcell, Türk Telekom and Vodafone have shops in the Istanbul Airport arrivals hall, after customs. Their tourist packs include a Turkish phone number and calling minutes, but you need your passport and have to register the line in person. As an example, in July 2026 Turkcell's tourist pack was listed at 1,800 TL (about US$38) for 20 GB and 200 minutes over 28 days, and Türk Telekom's Welcome 25 GB pack at 420 TL (about US$9). Airport shop prices change often and can include extra SIM fees.
- Choose a travel eSIM if you mainly need data, want to be online the moment you land, and don't want paperwork at the airport.
- Choose a Turkish tourist SIM if you need a local number, for example to make local calls or receive SMS codes from Turkish apps and services.
- Keep your home SIM switched on for calls and bank SMS codes, but turn off data roaming on it so you aren't charged.
How much data do you need in Türkiye?
Maps, messaging and social media use about 0.5–1 GB a day. For a week in Istanbul, a 5–10 GB plan is usually enough. If you will stream video, share a hotspot or work remotely, look at the 20 GB or unlimited plans above.
